R

Range Break

A term used to refer to the break points in a tariff pricing structure. Break points are established based on the rating units within the tariff pricing structure.

Rate

A generic term for system calculated rate or charged rate.

Rate Detail

The rate detail is part of the pricing structure of a tariff. The rate detail table contains base charges and per-unit rates, percentages or flat amounts for each possible range break defined for the service. There is a many-to-one relationship between the rate detail table and the rate header table.

Rate Header

The rate header is part of the pricing structure of a tariff. The rate header table contains base charges, minimum charges, and maximum charges for a specific tariff/service/freight class/charge code/rate code/equipment type/date range combination. If the charge code is defined as supporting range breaks, there will be associated rate details table entries defining the rates per range break.

Rate Shop

When the Rate Shop list is initially accessed, it will present a row for each qualifying tariff / service combination that meets the routing, rating (and optionally scheduling) requirements for an entity (e.g. load, trip, shipment leg). The first entry on the list will be the one selected by the route, rate and schedule process as the preferred alternative. The list is usually sequenced in ascending order by cost, but could also be sequenced in descending order based on carrier performance.

RateWare

A rating engine offered by Southern Motor Carriers. RateWare is supported as an external rating engine by Transportation Manager and Transportation Planner. RateWare provides standard LTL and Parcel rates in the USA.

Rating

The process of calculating freight charges for shipments, shipment legs, loads, trips, non-operational freight transactions or rate quotations.

Rating Unit

A specific quantifiable value against which a rate can be applied. Examples of rating units would be weight, containers, distance, volume, and order value.

Ready to Ship (RTS)

The Ready to Ship Module is a module that was developed by JDA Software Group Inc. using ABPP as an extension to Transportation Manager. Ready to Ship allowed vendors (modeled as customers in Transportation Manager) to provide shipping information pertaining to purchase orders previously sent by the corporation using Transportation Manager. This has been replaced by JDA Freight Order Management (FOM).

Reference Number

A number supplied by an external entity such as a customer or carrier to help identify an entity such as a load, shipment or container. See also "Reference Number Qualifier".

Reference Number Qualifier

An entity used to configure reference numbers in Transportation Manager. Reference Number Qualifiers can be used to enable Reference Numbers for selected transaction types for some or all applicable entities. Each Reference Number Qualifier will refer to a Reference Number Type (e.g. purchase order number, work order number, contract number).

Relay

Case where one driver takes a truck for 8 to 10 hours, then turns the truck over to another driver. This is a common practice in the less-than-truckload industry.

Rerouting

Rerouting is defined as instructions received from any authorized source to divert a shipment to a different destination before the carrier picks up the goods.

Resident Financial System

The financial application used by the shipper or third party logistics provider, including Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, and General Ledger modules.

Responsible Customer Override

The assignment of specific charges for a shipment to another customer.

Restricted Carrier

A carrier that is restricted from transporting shipments unless manually committed.

Restrictions

Constraints that you can define for a tariff service, tariff service equipment type or tariff service lane. Restrictions define minimums and/or maximums for various rating units. Routing will not select a tariff/service/equipment type combination if the attributes of the entity being routed are violate the minimums or maximums defined by the restrictions.

Return to Origin Distance

This is a sub-classification of Unloaded Distance that only applies to round trips. This is the distance traveled from the final drop off stop with an empty vehicle, to return to the origin point.

Revenue

An accounting term that refers to earnings realized from performing services or selling goods. In Transportation Manager, revenue is amounts charged to customers for freight services rendered. Revenues are combined with expenses to produce an income statement, which documents the amount of profit or loss over an accounting period.

Reverse Logistics

Normally, logistics deal with events that bring the product towards the customer. In the case of reverse logistics, the goods return at least one step back in the supply chain. For instance, in the case where goods are returned for credit, the goods will move from the customer back to the distributor or manufacturer.

Road Train

A tractor that is pulling two or more trailers (a.k.a. multi-train, doubles, triples).

Rolling

See "In-Transit".

Round Trip

A load or continuous move that travels from an origin to one or more intermediate stops, concluding at its point of origin. Mileage for a round trip load includes any return to origin deadhead required to bring the vehicle from the final drop point to the origin point.

Routing

The Transportation Manager process of determining the eligible tariff/service/equipment type combinations for a given origin/destination combination.

Routing and Rating

The Transportation Manager process of routing to find eligible tariff/service/equipment type combinations and then rating each of those based on the characteristics of the movement, as designated by the rating units applicable to the entity for which the routing and rating request was made.

RTS

See Ready to Ship (RTS).

Rule 11 (Rail)

Rule 11 refers to the practice of separately billing for rail charges by each carrier. When Rule 11 is in effect, the shipper will receive a freight bill from each rail carrier that handles their load.
