The Deficit Weight Freight Class (*DFC) is used when rating with the Look Ahead option in a multiclass environment, when the cost of sending the shipment leg at the lower end of the next rate range is lower than the cost of the shipment leg in its actual rate range.
For example: The rate range on a per 100 pound weight condition is:
Range To |
Rate Per 100 Pounds |
499.9999 |
$45 |
999.9999 |
$40 |
99999.9999 |
$35 |
The cost of a 900 lb. shipment in its actual rate range is (900/100) x $40 = $360.
The cost of the shipment at the lower end of the next rate range (1,000 lbs) is (1,000/100) x $35 = $350, or $10 less.
The shipment would therefore be rated as though it were 1,000 lbs. However, because the shipment is only 900 lbs., it has a deficit weight of the difference, 100 lbs.
The system will use the lowest freight class as the deficit weight freight class, and apply it to the deficit weight.
