Carrier tracking numbers can be generated by Transportation Manager, another application, or input manually.
Embedded within any tracking number generated by Transportation Manager will be a numeric value that is incremented each time a new number is generated. The range defined by the starting and ending positions will define the portion of the reference number that will be incremented each time the system generates a new carrier tracking number.
For numbers that are input manually, a portion of the number provided will contain a numeric sequence that is unique for each tracking number. Usually when tracking numbers are supplied to the system, they are scanned from a bar code label that is affixed to a package. It is necessary to define this range even for manually assigned numbers to insure that check digit edit can be performed. This range should not include the position occupied by the check digit, if one is active.
