Laden Length (a.k.a. loading meters) is yet another method of addressing situations where using actual weight as the basis for rate calculation would not adequately compensate the carrier for the amount of vehicle space that would be required to move the goods. Laden Length defines the number of linear feet or meters that would be required to transport the goods. Some carriers will use the greater of actual weight, dimensional weight and equivalent laden length weight as the basis for establishing a weight based rate.
Laden Length is one of the shipment attributes that can be defined for a shipment container. Since Laden Length will represent an actual length, the value specified must be expressed in the Length UOM of the customer for whom the container is being created. When a Laden Length Weight Factor is defined for a tariff charge, it should be expressed in terms of the Length UOM for the corresponding tariff. If necessary, the Laden Length defined in the container table will be converted to Length UOM of the tariff before the Laden Length Weight Factor is applied.
A minimum is required for Laden Length Weight. However, unlike Dimensional Weight, when a Laden Length Minimum is defined, this value should be used in the event that the computed Equivalent Laden Length Weight is less than the Laden Length Minimum. This minimum must be expressed in relation to the Weight UOM of the tariff.
These values are only be accessible for tariff charges where the corresponding master charge is configured to use Weight as the (Rating) Unit Type and the Multi-Freight Class flag is False.
